Normalizing weird

I'm all about fostering a locally unique sense of place, but I'm not sure if stealing a slogan from Austin is the best place to start.

That slogan has been ripped off so many times. Wimberley, TX, has one that goes, "Keep Wimberley weirder."

What's the history of that quote? I feel like I've seen it around here for years...

Everyone says "Its ripped off from Austin..." but the whole idea is supporting local businesses. What is so bad about that?

Supporting local businesses is great. I wish more people would. I don't have a problem with the bumper sticker at all. I just thought the irony of it all was funny enough to spend a minute posting about it.

OK, here's the deal on 'Keep Wimberley Weirder!". I came up with it and actually communicated how funny it would be to Red Wassinich, Austin Community College librarian. Red was the originator of 'Keep Austin Weird' and was ripped off by a company called Outhouse Designs who trade marked it before Red could or even would. Knowing of that injustice, I contacted Red and he suggested I trade mark mine, so I did. Or more accurately we did; my gal Sharon and I made T-shirts and bumper stickers (purple and green). So it's not a rip off as much as a gentle borrowing which simply means support local organizations and keep from becoming as mainstream as even Austin has become. Now you know...Thanks, Rolán Ramos.
