Not sure it would be economically beneficial, but ...who knows? Maybe if I associated my milk with Calvinists and my eggs with back-sliding Lutherans, my ecumenical breakfast might lead me to tolerate diversity more.

His is quite a revealing mind-frame of the age, though! The social organization of the neighborhood unit is centered on the pub in the UK, but Douglass had American Gothic to contend with, heh, heh.Eric Orozcohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00320742140050171881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5079297043552042968.post-45708721158236012372011-08-31T23:03:00.387-04:002011-08-31T23:03:00.387-04:00Eric, you picked up on something that I noticed wh...Eric, you picked up on something that I noticed while reading as well. Douglass does not leave much room for multiple institutions or social circles inhabiting the same town.

He engages in quite a bit of discussion about church organization, which is pretty illuminating in this regard. Being well within the ecumenical movement of the time, he believed that every church in the town should be, in some way or another, consolidated into one town church. He gives lots of ways this could be accomplished. For example, if the denominations don't want to give up their churches, he recommends a swap among the high-level church leaders. The Methodists would give up their church in Pleasantville in exchange for merging into the Baptist church in Ferndale. While this may meet his standards for religious efficiency, he doesn't really ask whether the Methodists of Pleasantville WANT to become Baptists. He simply assumes that a spirit of civic unity will trump differences in belief and lifestyle.

I don't think this assumption is made by anyone now - and for good reason.Daniel Nairnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14127732825472374125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5079297043552042968.post-28118478354089396602011-08-31T20:59:04.982-04:002011-08-31T20:59:04.982-04:00Douglass's layering of catchment area maps to ...Douglass's layering of catchment area maps to understand the integration of social and economic units sure anticipates a powerful trajectory in urban planning, right?... I wonder if the influence is partly his?

The problem with his approach, as I see it, is that it betrays a insular view of community (to me anyway), which is focused on singles: a single civic heart, a singular church catchment, etc.

Sorry to get off on the Savannah tangent :) ...but I can't help reflecting on the similarity and contrasts of Douglass's tripartite geographic & social framework, town - black belt - farm, with Savannah's tripartite zoning: town - garden lot - farm. By giving each family unit a stake in each zone, Savannah's plan "disperses" private stakes, and the return is territorial political integration, benefiting mutual economic relationships across land modes, as well as (at the same time!) promoting the creation of a diversity of civic centers in the squares of the wards. That quilt-like quality of its form, in particular, is well suited to accommodating a pluralistic civil society made up of multiple social units attached to a panoply of civic interests.

Daniel, re: small town nostalgia, I think you'll find this Brookings post by Bruce Katz & Owen Washburn interesting.Eric Orozcohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00320742140050171881noreply@blogger.com
